Program Coordinator Position with AFS Germany – 1 Opening

Background on AFS:
AFS (formerly American Field Service) is one of oldest and largest, nonprofit, intercultural exchange organizations in the world. It was founded in 1919 by former WWI volunteer ambulance drivers as a response to worldwide conflict. The AFS mission is to dedicate itself to building a more just and peaceful world through intercultural exchange and learning.  

AFS Germany is the second largest partner in the 55 country network. Locally AFS Germany is partnered with The Jane Goodall Institute – Roots & Shoots Shanghai. Our biggest program is the AFS Community Service Program (CSP for foreign young adults (aged 18-29) to learn more about Chinese culture and language while positively contributing to Chinese society through volunteer work in local nonprofit organizations.

Program Coordinator Job Description:
AFS is looking for Program Coordinator to help with various projects and programs in the office. The Program Coordinator position will report directly to the Program Director. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to work in an international non-profit office setting and help expand programs in China with AFS Intercultural Programs. Actual salary and benefits will be discussed during the final interview process.

Skills/ Background required:
-        4th year university students, recent graduates, and those with interest in intercultural exchanges and volunteerism
-        Fluent written and spoken English and Mandarin Chinese
-        Good computer skills with Microsoft Office software; knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and graphic design is preferred
-        Current experience with volunteerism or non-profit work is preferred. Please indicate this on your resume
-        Independent thinker, responsible, able to meet deadlines, and energetic
-        Ability to multitask and work in a small office environment.
-        Ability to work with minimal supervision and weekend hours as necessary.
-        Must be flexible and have good humour


Main tasks - Program Related:
Support the Program Director in a variety of tasks for ongoing programs. Specific tasks include:
-        Help organize volunteer events and program information sessions
-        Find and interview host families for community service programs and short-term programs
-        Communicate with host families, partners volunteers and other organizations by answering questions, coordinating activity or gathering information
-        Mediate participant and host family problems as they occur
-        Develop and modify training & orientation materials for participants and volunteers
-        Conduct training & orientation for CSP program or other program/function
-        Evaluate programs and partners with participants, volunteers or AFS Program Director
-        Answering the 24 hour emergency cell phone for emergency cases (e.g. hospitalization)
-        Teleconference candidates for CSP program
-        Attend or hold meetings with partner organizations or AFS strategy meetings

Main Tasks - Other Responsibilities:
-        Develop ways to expand and promote various AFS programs
-        Translate materials from English into Chinese and Chinese to English for publications and magazines.
-        Write materials in English or Chinese for brochures, publications and magazines.
-        Develop and oversee the AFS newsletter
-        Research for the Program Director on various potential projects
-        Help with various office related tasks, including administrative (photocopying, filing, writing letters to host families, etc.) and operational (designing and printing brochures and newsletters)

4)        Please describe an experience you encountered where you faced difficulties or obstacles with limited resources. Please describe the experience and what you did to overcome the difficulty.

5)        Which types of environments (work or personal) do you work best in? Which types of environments (work or personal) are difficult for you?  For example, do you work best with others in a team environment or by yourself with maybe one or two other people? Do you like a lot of supervision or minimal supervision? Do you like knowing what you will do each day or do you think it’s exciting to find out each morning at work?
